schools who have more 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:42.500 resources than we do we we are struggling 00:00:42.500 --> 00:00:45.000 financially we're struggling with enrollment 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:47.500 just be honest we're struggling with our budget at 00:00:47.500 --> 00:00:50.000 this time um we're struggling to keep students 00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:52.500 engaged and 1 thing that we 00:00:52.500 --> 00:00:55.000 have learned since covid is that um a 00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:57.500 lot of kids can do things online they can do school 00:00:57.500 --> 00:01:00.000 online they can uh enroll in 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:02.500 Virtual Academy and they can do things online that 00:01:02.500 --> 00:01:05.000 allow them to travel or allow them to do 00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:07.500 homeschool and a lot of kids come 00:01:07.500 --> 00:01:10.000 to school not because they love algebra or 00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:12.500 they love education but they love all the things that school 00:01:12.500 --> 00:01:15.000 has to offer for them so if you take 00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:17.500 look at at your handout here on the right hand side 00:01:17.500 --> 00:01:20.000 and look through like the Athletics if you don't then it kind of Fades 00:02:17.500 --> 00:02:20.000 away and I I see a couple parents in here who have 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:22.500 power lifters and so you know what I'm talking about I 00:02:22.500 --> 00:02:25.000 was not a power lifter and 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:27.500 did not have a brother who was a power lifter but I have a 00:02:27.500 --> 00:02:30.000 son who thought he wanted to try it and we tried 00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:32.500 for 1 um year and I 00:02:32.500 --> 00:02:35.000 was um I learned a lot being 00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:37.500 a parent of a power lifter and it 00:02:37.500 --> 00:02:40.000 costs quite a bit of money to be 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:42.500 a power lifter uh apparently there are these suits 00:02:42.500 --> 00:02:45.000 that you wear that cost quite a bit of money 00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:47.500 believe that you have to you put on 00:02:47.500 --> 00:02:50.000 and it blows my mind that they're actually legal to 00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:52.500 00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:27.500 that was not the route to go so then we started looking 00:04:27.500 --> 00:04:30.000 at a property tax and 00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:32.500 of course that was like oh not another property 00:04:32.500 --> 00:04:35.000 tax you know and so we already have a couple of those 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:37.500 for our Mill um our operations and 00:04:37.500 --> 00:04:40.000 our maintenance and of course that's how we did the renovation 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:42.500 several years ago and but there 00:04:42.500 --> 00:04:45.000 did come the idea of an educational 00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:47.500 facilities improvement district and that's 00:04:47.500 --> 00:04:50.000 what is on the left hand side 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:52.500 of your page and so I want to talk to you a little 00:05:52.500 but so that we enacted this 00:05:52.500 --> 00:05:55.000 board the board did and then they they can Levy 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:57.500 this tax and they report directly to the school board 00:05:57.500 --> 00:06:00.000 so this board was 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:02.500 enacted to Levy this tax 00:06:02.500 --> 00:06:05.000 now in the top left hand corner it 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:07.500 kind of has some restrictions about what this sales 00:06:07.500 --> 00:06:10.000 tax can do it's a 1-step 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:12.500 sales tax and so when you think about 1 00:06:12.500 --> 00:06:15.000 cent it's 1 cent for every dollar that you spend so 00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:17.500 we spend a dollar it's a penny you spend $10 00:06:17.500 --> 00:06:20.000 it's uh 10 cents or if 00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:22.500 you spend a hundred dollars it's an extra dollar uh 00:06:22.500 --> 00:06:25.000 it exempts your Food and Drug purchases 00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:27.500 so when you go to the grocery store it's not going to add 00:06:27.500 --> 00:06:30.000 another Penny to your grocery bill 00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:32.500 it is exempt for your prescription 00:06:32.500 --> 00:06:50.000 other sales taxes that we have it's a 20-year 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:52.500 sales tax but it's basically 00:06:52.500 --> 00:06:55.000 enacted to generate funding 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:57.500 for long-term projects 00:06:57.500 --> 00:07:00.000 um for facility Improvement 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:02.500 it does not impact property 00:07:02.500 --> 00:07:05.000 taxes there's been a lot of questions about that but 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:07.500 it does not there's no way that 00:07:07.500 --> 00:07:10.000 it involves your property taxes the 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:12.500 other sorts of things but there are no grants available 00:08:37.500 --> 00:08:40.000 for athletics there are no grants 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:42.500 available for clubs or extracurriculars for 00:08:42.500 --> 00:08:45.000 band we use them in very few 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:47.500 for arts or anything like that so and absolutely 00:08:47.500 --> 00:08:50.000 nothing for Capital Improvements 00:08:50.000 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:22.500 night in a hotel in New Orleans it 00:10:22.500 --> 00:10:25.000 back to Power list and you go back and of course they made 00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:27.500 it to State on borrowed equipment borrowed suits 00:10:27.500 --> 00:10:30.000 but to go spend the night in New Orleans 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:32.500 to compete at the state tournament what do you have 00:10:32.500 --> 00:10:35.000 to do you have to fund raise 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:37.500 and so and I'm a part of this group needs and 00:10:37.500 --> 00:10:40.000 so I see those parents going off about I'm going another in our business we're getting hit up 1 time 00:10:47.500 --> 00:10:50.000 after another and parents don't like do any 00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:52.500 of you like going to ask for money I
